Indirect Taxes

Using the appropriate diagrams, explain why the relative burden (incidence) of an indirect tax on the producers & on the consumer varies depending on the price elasticity of demand for the good/product. Indirect Tax is a tax placed upon the selling price of a product, so it raises the firm’s cost and shifts the supply curve left or vertically upwards depending on the amount of tax. Because of this shift, less products will be supplied at every price. The diagram below shows the effect of imposing a tax and how the tax is being paid. There’re two types of indirect taxes, they are ‘Specific Taxes’ and ‘Ad Valorem’.Specific Tax is a fixed amount of tax that is imposed on a product. For example, if the government imposes a tax of $2 per loaf of bread, it will shift the supply curve vertically upwards by the amount of tax, which is S2. This is shown by the diagram below. Ad Valorem, also known as ‘percentage tax’, is a percentage of tax from the selling price of a good. In this case, the supply curve will not shift directly upwards because the gap between the ‘price’ and the ‘price + tax’ will get bigger as the price rises. For example, a packet of cigarette costs $10.If the government imposes a 20% tax per packet, the tax on each packet of cigarette would be $2. This is shown by the diagram below. When the government puts a tax on a product, the product’s price will usually increase in order to achieve maximum profit. Which means that the quantity demanded for the product is likely to decrease. If the demand for a product is very elastic, then a price increase as a result of the imposition of a tax on the product will lead to a relatively large fall in the demand for the product. For example, Waitrose pasta and Tesco Value pasta both cost $5 per pack.However the price of Waitrose pasta increases to $6 because of the rise in tax. This would result an immediate change in demand from Waitrose pasta to Tesco Value pasta instead. This means that the Tesco Value pasta consumers would carry on buying pasta from Tesco, whiles a lot of the Waitrose pasta consumers would switch to buy pasta from Tesco instead of Waitrose. This can be shown by the diagram below. On the other hand, if the government imposes a tax on a product where demand is relatively inelastic, the demand for product will not fall significantly despite the huge rise in price.For example, coffee and tea both cost $5, but coffee has become an absolutely essential drink in the morning, whiles tea is just for people’s interest. If the price of the coffee rises significantly to $10 and the price of tea stays the same, the coffee demanded will not change a lot because people still see it as a necessity good (a good that we can’t live without, or won’t likely to cut back on even when times are tough), and therefore the change in demand would only decrease by a little. This is shown by th e diagram below.As we can see from the two diagrams above, the share of the tax burden from consumers and producers varies. The reason for that is because the price elasticity of the demand and supply for the product costs a different shift towards the supply curve. Another reason is because there are other firms (different numbers of firms, the size of a firm) producing the same good, causing competition. Therefore, the relative burden of an indirect tax on the producers and consumers would vary depending on the price elasticity of demand for the good/product.

Now comes a group of his mates, Black birds flying in white rotten sky, How long shall they remain in their smile shy? The fruits of mouth are very sharp. Now Garrett is turned into a dove, Putting white color in his black skin hove, He remarks, â€Å"I will be in their hove. † But f rustrated as he is, failed and shoved. Crying and heaving heart feelings, He trembles in distaste hangings,Came a man of fancy bringing, Offers him a bead of woven linen. Alas, I came to save you from the bondages of your own misery! The tunnels are empty and danger woven, I bring light to thee, I act on the premise of my wrath, I tremble on the problems of others’ hat, I smile on the mask’s facade, The gas saves and saving. The roads are jammed and blurry, But I bring order and merry. At last, I’m in the annals of history. This poem is generally about a poor black boy (Garrett Morgan- child of former slaves) who wanted to become a member of the white society.Born into a poor family, he strove hard to be accepted by the society. Because of poverty, he stopped studying. All he could do now was imitate the fashion of the white society. The first step was to become â€Å"white† in the sense of changing the color of her skin. He failed miserably, noting that even if his skin changes, his identity will remain black, his ancestry will remain black. However, his status in society did not prevent him from making accomplishments. He invented the traffic lights and military gas mask: one of the symbols of modern society.

Idolization of Elvis Presley After Death

Elvis Presley was the first rock and roll star. He was born January 8, 1935, in East Tupelo, MS. Presley was the son of Gladys and Vernon Presley, a sewing machine operator and a truck driver. He and his parents moved to Memphis, TN in 1948 and Elvis graduated from Humes High School in 1953. Elvis Presley is one of the world’s most famous singers and icon of music and pop culture. His talent, good looks, sensuality, charisma, and good humor endeared him to millions, as did the humility and human kindness he demonstrated throughout his life. Elvis was a very kind man. He did everything he could for people around him. In 1975, he purchased a poor black East Memphis woman an electric wheel chair and picked her up and personally sat her in it. The woman’s teenage daughter told Elvis she liked his car. He gave it to her and even gave her boyfriend a job. Studies show that Presley was bullied at school. Classmates threw things at him, rotten fruit and stuff, because he was different, such as quiet and he stuttered and he was a mama’s boy. All of this showed him that he had to change his attitude and become someone that he was not. Presley was more popular than ever and one of the biggest personality cults in modern history was taking hold. When Presley was off stage he suffered self doubt, poor management, and a basic dissatisfaction with his life. With these thoughts he turned to drugs to solve all of his problems. Elvis’ musical influences were the pop and country music of the time, the gospel music he heard in church and at the all-night gospel sings he frequently attended, and the black R&B he absorbed on historic Beale Street as a Memphis teenager. He put together music from both sides of the color line. Elvis performed this music with a hip swiveling sexuality that made him a teen idol and a role model for generations of cool rebels. He was always dismissed vulgar, incompetent and bad influence. Teenage girls became hysterical over his sexual movements; particularly the one that got him nicknamed â€Å"Elvis the Pelvis†. Television cameras were not permitted to film below his waist. Presley had a versatile voice and had unusually wide success with other genres, including gospel, blues, ballads, and pop. To this day, he is the only performer to have been inducted into four music halls of fame. People today still think that Elvis was the greatest person in the world and he was not. Of course he made good music and had accomplished things that people still haven’t been able to do to this day but he also did a lot of bad things also. He was a prescription drug abuser and even led many women on to think that he really liked them instead of just telling them all the truth. Elvis Presley died on August 16, 1977 in the bathroom at Graceland. Studies show that he died of cardiac arrhythmia, which means that the heart was beating irregularly and in this case, finally stopped. While that is so true he also overdosed on many different prescription drugs. These drugs included codeine, valium, morphine, and Demerol. These were the drugs that were said to be Presley’s depressants. Now that Elvis has been for 31 years, he still has many people talking and seeing him as he is still alive. People still praise him after his death. That is so against the Christian religion. The Christian bible says that you shouldn’t idolize any other person but the Almighty above. You will be punished for idolizing any other person other than God. Okay I can understand leaving his house up for public show but having old pork chops and pajamas all on the floor is uncaused for. People just take it overboard and then for him to have been dead for so long, why do people keep saying that he is still alive. It just doesn’t make any sense for them to be saying that and they know that he is buried behind his Graceland home in Memphis. Since Elvis’ death, his Memphis home Graceland has become a shrine for millions of followers worldwide. Graceland was purchased by Presley in March 1957, it was a former church and he converted it into a twenty three room mansion. Graceland visitors come from all walks of life, all ages, all musical tastes, all income levels, all educational backgrounds, and all parts of the world. Over half of Graceland’s visitors are under the age of 35. I am 19 years old and would ride pass Presley’s house everyday and would care less what’s in his house. You can see how it looks from the streets. People even gathered twice a year to celebrate his birthday and mourn on his death date. I think that that is the craziest thing ever. These are people that know nothing about this man and have only listened to his music and do stuff like this. I mean Elvis Presley Blvd will be backed up for miles because people are out worshipping this man and he is nobody. Yes he may have given Memphis a good name but he did nothing for the city itself. We had B. B King and many others and you barely hear anything about them. When you hear of Memphis it’s all about Elvis Presley and he did nothing. Presley’s home Graceland is the second most popular private tourist attraction in the United States after the White House, and is estimated to bring in $150 million to the city itself each year. I just can’t believe that because Memphis has streets that need to be fixed, need new schools, and more. Memphis is not a perfect city at all and if we’re getting that much from Graceland then we should be close to perfect. Presley’s family or daughter is getting that money and it makes me upset to see them say that Memphis is getting a percent of that money and we not seeing a dime of it. In conclusion, Elvis has brought a lot to Memphis and has given us a good name. Elvis was one of the best artists alive but he is gone and people should treat him as such. He lived as a good man or so they say but he gone now. It is fine to leave his house up for attractions but do something with the money to help the communities around Memphis and to better it. Idolization is not right and should not be practiced. It doesn’t matter who it is. Nobody amounts to God and nobody should be compared or treated as God is.

To this end, the scope for investing in the UK Automobile Industry increases especially since England offers a more hassle-free way of exiting the industry, given lower barriers to closing down. The NGAIT team collected a variety of information about what industry professionals thought was the drawbacks faced by the companies in the sector. Firstly, they all agreed that there was a shortage of skilled labor specific to the industry. Mostly, companies suffered from lack of skilled mid-level management and engineers. It came to be understood that most of the university an college going students do not opt for engineering and those of them who do predominantly take jobs in the financial rather than the manufacturing sector. Trends over the last decade show that although, as mentioned in the success factors, the quality of the R&D resources in the UK is very high, contrariwise, the expenditure on R&D has declined. The proposals include background checks for all gun related transactions, stronger bans on assault rifles, and emergence response funds for shootings in schools. The proposals also include enhancing mental health services access among the young people and providing the law enforcement agencies more powers to investigate and prosecute citizens involved in gun related crimes (Valdez, 2003). The process policy model is the best model in legislating gun control laws. The focal point of the model is the political processes that involve all concerned stakeholders through changing the perception of the citizens and allowing public participation (Ginsberg & Miller-Cribbs, 2005). The process model starts with problem identification and the need of government action towards solving the problem (Fox, Bayat & Ferreira, 2006). The second step will include policy formulation and development of p roposals through the input of congressional committees and other interest groups. The third step should entail legitimization of the policy which will entail making the policy as law by the actions of the Congress and the President. The fourth step will entail implementation of the policy as law across the country through preparation of budgets and measures of the law enforcement agencies (Ginsberg & Miller-Cribbs, 2005). The final step will entail evaluation of the policy by the government agencies in order to ascertain whether the policy and laws have been able to deter gun related violence across the country (Fox, Bayat & Ferreira, 2006). Agenda setting/ identification of the gun violence problem The initial step in gun control policy will be outlining the need to legislate on gun control. The President will outline the societal need of protection from gun violence and escalating gun related deaths in the country (Fox, Bayat & Ferreira, 2006). The President must make the citizens also understand the Second Amendment of the constitution did not grant citizens the individual right to gun ownership. There are many pros and cons about distance and traditional education, as well as many similarities and differences. Online education is a more flexible option for students to get an education since most classes can be taken anywhere you are able to take your laptop or hook up to the internet. It’s very convenient for people who have a busy lifestyle, such as families, full-timer workers, and those who serve in the military. With online learning, students don’t have the traditional methods of sitting at a desk and learning with lectures and books. You have the freedom to learn your way at your own comfort level. Studies have shown that in online learning conditions perform better than those receiving traditional instruction (NCU). However, for some, lectures in the classroom are more beneficial to them since some need more a more hands on approach. A disadvantage of online learning is not having your degree being seen as creditable. Be sure that your college choice is accredited since there are many â€Å"Degree Mills† out looking for your money. There are many students and employers who are skeptics about how much you really do learn from online learning. According to Allie Bidwell from USA news, In a survey of 656 human resources professionals released Wednesday, the researchers found that although nearly half of employers said online-only programs require more discipline, 56 percent said they still prefer applicants with traditional degrees from an average university over those with an online degree from a top university. Overall, most employers (82 percent) said a combination of in-person and online education would benefit the majority of students (Bidwell, 2013). Most employers are going to view how effective an online education is by the quality of the new hires  they bring in. Cost is another consideration to think of when deciding to go online or traditional. Online education is less expensive since there are no extra fees for maintaining a large campus or classrooms. Some classes may not even require books for you to purchase. Either way you choose to go, there are still rules and guidelines that must be followed. Along with that, attendance is still a must with online education and participation in discussions just as you would participate in a classroom. Depending on the type of person you are and the lifestyle you live, either online or traditional education will be right for you. Course Syllabus Page 3 Grading Policy, Exams and Assignments Exams: There will be three examinations in this course. These examinations are not cumulative, and the format of each exam will be multiple choice. You will need an 882 Scantron for each exam. Case Assignments: You will be assigned three cases from selected chapters. Each case is valued at 25 points. The case assignments will be graded on clarity of thought process, grammar, spelling and technical content. All  assignments must be typed and must use Standard English with correct grammar and punctuation. The case assignments are due at the beginning of class. NO EXCEPTIONS. If for any reason, you are unable to attend class on the day a case assignment is due, assignments will be accepted by email (preferably attached as a MS Word or Excel File) as long as the case arrives before 8:30 a. m. on the due date. Research Project: Each student team will select an SEC reporting company and complete a research project on that  company. Course Instructor Policies Regarding Attendance, Homework and Make Up Exams Attendance: Attendance for every class is expected. It is critical to your success that you attend each class and take notes during the lectures. You should come to class prepared, which means that you should have read the assigned material. Office hours are not a substitute for coming to class;  accordingly, I will not go over material covered in class with you if you have missed class. As a courtesy to others, please turn off your cellular phones while in the classroom. I will periodically post selected solutions to Chapter problems in ELearning. Makeup Exams: Makeup exams are given only for excused absences, which must be determined prior to the exam. Excused absences may be given for verifiable medical or family emergencies. Written documentation must be provided to qualify for an â€Å"excused absence†. The medical Course Syllabus Page 5 documentation must specifically state that you could not attend the exam on the day of the exam due to your illness and must be signed by a licensed physician.  Students who do not show up for an exam without making arrangements with me prior to the exam will receive a zero. All documentation evidencing your absence from an exam is due within 5 business days of the missed exam and you must make up the missed exam within 7 business days of the absence. For example if the missed class were on Wednesday night the 10th, you would have until Friday the 19th to complete the makeup. If the documentation is not received within the 5 days and the exam is not completed within the 7 day window, a zero is awarded to the student. The determination of  an â€Å"acceptable† excuse is solely up to the instructors discretion. Also, it is solely the students responsibility to communicate with the instructor regarding these issues and it is solely the students responsibility to ensure that the instructor is receiving the communication and any documentation. Email Use The University of Texas at Dallas recognizes the value and efficiency of communication between faculty/staff and students through electronic mail. At the same time, email raises some issues concerning security and the identity of each individual in an email exchange. The university encourages all official student email correspondence be sent only to a student’s U. T. Dallas email address and that faculty and staff consider email from students official only if it originates from a  UTD student account. This allows the university to maintain a high degree of confidence in the identity of all individual corresponding and the security of the transmitted information. UTD furnishes each student with a free email account that is to be used in all communication with university personnel. The Department of Information Resources at U. T. Dallas provides a method for students to have their U. T. Dallas mail forwarded to other accounts. Course Syllabus Page 7 Withdrawal from Class The administration of this institution has set deadlines for withdrawal of any college-level courses. These dates and times are published in that semesters course catalog. Administration procedures must be followed. It is the students responsibility to handle withdrawal requirements from any class. In other words, I cannot drop or withdraw any student. You must do the proper paperwork to ensure that you will not receive a final grade of F in a course if you choose not to attend the class once you are enrolled. Student Grievance Procedures Procedures for student grievances are found in Title V, Rules on Student Services and Activities, of the university’s Handbook of Operating Procedures. In attempting to resolve any student grievance regarding grades, evaluations, or other fulfillments of academic responsibility, it is the obligation of the student first to make a serious effort to resolve the matter with the instructor, supervisor, administrator, or committee with whom the grievance originates (hereafter called â€Å"the respondent†). Individual faculty members retain primary responsibility for assigning grades and evaluations. If the matter cannot be resolved at that level, the grievance must be submitted in writing to the respondent with a copy of the respondent’s School Dean. If the matter is not resolved by the written response provided by the respondent, the student may submit a written appeal to the School Dean. If the grievance is not resolved by the School Dean’s decision, the student may make a written appeal to the Dean of Graduate or Undergraduate Education, and the deal will appoint and convene an Academic Appeals Panel. Incomplete Grade Policy As per university policy, incomplete grades will be granted only for work unavoidably missed at the semester’s end and only if 70% of the course work has been completed. An incomplete grade must be resolved within eight (8) weeks from the first day of the subsequent long semester. If the required work to complete the course and to remove the incomplete grade is not submitted by the specified deadline, the incomplete grade is changed automatically to a grade of F. Disability Services. The goal of Disability Services is to provide students with disabilities educational opportunities equal to those of their non-disabled peers. Individuals requiring special accommodation should contact the professor after class or during office hours. Religious Holy Days The University of Texas at Dallas will excuse a student from class or other required activities for the travel to and observance of a religious holy day for a religion whose places of worship are  exempt from property tax under Section 11. 20, Tax Code, Texas Code Annotated. The student is encouraged to notify the instructor or activity sponsor as soon as possible regarding the absence, preferably in advance of the assignment. The student, so excused, will be allowed to take the exam or complete the assignment within a reasonable time after the absence: a period equal to the length of the absence, up to a maximum of one week. A student who notifies the instructor and completes any missed exam or assignment may not be penalized for the absence. A  student who fails to complete the exam or assignment within the prescribed period may receive a failing grade for that exam or assignment. If a student or an instructor disagrees about the nature of the absence [i. e. , for the purpose of observing a religious holy day] or if there is similar disagreement about whether the student has been given a reasonable time to complete any missed assignments or examinations, either the student or the instructor may request a ruling from the chief executive officer of the institution, or his or her designee. The chief executive officer or designee must take into account the legislative  intent of TEC 51. 911(b), and the student and instructor will abide by the decision of the chief executive officer or designee. These descriptions and timelines are subject to change at the discretion of the Professor. Your final grade in the class is also subject to the discretion of the Professor based upon your earned grades and your conduct during the semester which could include; attendance, conduct during the semester, failure to communicate with the professor or your teammates and the work product expected of a Graduate student as compared to others in the class.

Dangal Film Analysis DANGAL Dangal, a wrestling competition is an Indian Hindi-language biographical sports drama film directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Aamir Khan and Sidharth Roy Kapur with the star cast Aamir Khan as Mahavir Singh Phogat, who taught wrestling to his daughters Geeta Phogat, Indias first wrestler to win gold medal at Commonwealth Games, 2010 in 55 kg category and Babita Kumari. A silver medalist in 55 kg category. Dangal was released on an estimated 4300 screens in India and 100 screens internationally on 23rd December, 2016 and in the United States on 21 December. Box Office India declared this movie as All Time Blockbuster and emerged as the highest grossing Hindi film domestically, and the second highest paid Indian film of all time with the worldwide collection of à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¹741.08 crore (US$110 million). a) Major characters Aamir Khan: Aamir Khan as Mahavir Singh Phogat, who taught wrestling to his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari. Fatima Sana Shaikh: Fatima Sana Shaikh played a role of Geeta Phogat, a freestyle wrestler who won Indias first ever gold medal in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games, in 2010. She is also the first-ever Indian woman wrestler to have qualified for the Olympics. He was unable to win a gold medal for India and always was in the hope that his son will do his dream come true. He got disappointed when his wife gives birth to four daughters. He gave up all his dream to become a wrestler and he was treating his daughters as they are made for house hold work and not for any other thing. But when Geeta and Babita came home after beating two boys on the road then he realized that they have the potential to become something like him. Mahavir begins coaching Geeta and Babita of wrestling. His methods were too hard for little girls but he was giving training to his daughters to become hard. His training included every early morning runs and workouts and girls were got shorted hairs after arguing for no practice due to hair. Initially, the girls resent their father for his treatment but they soon realize that their father want to give them a great bright future rather than just sitting at house and cook for the family. Then the girls become motivated and started to participate willingly in Mahavirs coaching. Mahavir started to take girls to wrestling tournaments and he fixed the matches against the boys and Geeat and Babita always beat those boys. Geeta started her progress toward wrestling and won the Junior Internationals and she was selected for further training in an institute in Patiala. Geeta made friends at the institute and begins to break the discipline that she has been given by her father. She started watching TV, eating street food, and grows her hair longer. Her coachs training completely differs from her fathers techniques. Geeta believes that Mahavirs techniques are outdated and her coachs techniques are well implemented. After a long time when she come back home, she is determined to show her father she can wrestle well without his techniques. But Mahavir lost against her due to age and Geeta went back to her institute by leaving the home. Babita told Geeta that she shouldnt forget her fathers techniques because what she is now only due her father. Babita also admitted to that institute with Geeta. Geeta was losing every match because she was not following her fathers techniques. After realizing her error, she calmly makes peace with Mahavir. Mahavir comes to the institute and begins coaching Geeta and Babita, with the same methods as they learned before. Their coach is furious with Mahavirs interference and realize that his will lost due to Mahavir and he started to make tries to keep away Mahavir from the institute. But Mahavir was act as smart and he started to observe Geetas mistake from her previous matches recordings and continues to assist her through the phone. During Geetas bouts in the Commonwealth Games, Mahavir was constantly giving the instructions to her while sitting in the audience and she started to disregard her coach and follows her fathers instructions and wins every match. Just before the final bout, Geetas jealous coach conspires to lock Mahavir in a closet far away from the arena. Despite her fathers absence, Geeta manages to win the final bout and becomes the first Indian female wrestler to win gold. Mahavir returns just in time to embrace his daughters, frustrating the coachs hopes of obtaining credit before the news media. Babita also won gold medal in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games in 2014, while Geeta became the first Indian female wrestler to qualify for the Olympics and besides all that Mahavirs efforts inspired dozens of Indian women to participate in wrestling. Review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reports that the film holds an 83% approval rating, based on 6 reviews, with an average score of 7.3/10. Dangal became the 2nd Indian film to cross the à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¹700 crore (US$100 million) mark after PK. Dangal is second Indian film to gross more than Rs 200 crore in overseas markets, after PK grossed US$46.52 million (Rs 294 crore). Many guns are used all around the world. All guns have the potential to become very dangerous weapons. The automatic assault weapon is one of these potentially dangerous weapons, which is used for many different tasks. Although some automatic assault weapons can be beneficially used, the sale of all automatic assault weapons should be banned because they allow many unnecessary accidents to happen, people who tend not to be dangerous have the possibility to become dangerous, and they allow the public the opportunity to become as powerful as the police and the military. Granted, guns can be used beneficially in many different ways. Hunting is one of these ways. However, is hunting still a sport when you can shoot off ten rounds in a second at an animal? Retaliation cannot even occur from these defenseless animals. So guns can be used beneficially, but not automatic assault weapons. The many numbers of accidental deaths by weapons is growing. This is due to the many different weapons out and the lack of knowledge about these weapons. If we are not going to ban automatic assault weapons we should make courses on each weapon mandatory. This will cut down on the many accidents due to automatic assault weapons. Also, people who own automatic assault weapons tend to become dangerous. With the weapon they now have the option of using or not using the weapon. This allows a small fraction of thought and if the person chooses the automatic assault weapon things could get out of hand and the person could become dangerous. More so, people will be allowed to become as powerful as the police and the military. The police and the military have trouble enough handling people without weapons. Also, with the weapons people become the same strength as the police because many of the automatic weapons that the police use are sold to the public.

Personal Writing: Our Trip to See the Band "Last One Standing" This past Friday I traveled down to Burlington with my friends Justin, Jamie, and Steve. The purpose of our trip was to see Justin and his band, Last One Standing, play at his old high school in Colchester. We all met around three o'clock, then piled into Justin's black, Volkswagen GTI, behind the Senators dorm. His car being a little used, it took fifteen minutes to actually be on our way. We put on some fast-paced driving music, a band called INTEGRITY(they're a hardcore band), and left the worries of Johnson behind us. The trip was a lot smoother in good company, even though our driver, Justin was getting a little frustrated while driving in heavy traffic. He has a short temper, and following a line of cars that are going thirty-five miles an hour in a fifty zone does not help. A sigh of relief passed through the car as we came into Burlington. Justin dropped me off at my house in Burlington at four o'clock, a few hours before his show started. I made my plans with them for later and sent them on their way. Something about being home makes me feel much more relaxed. Walking into your house and immediately recognizing that perfect smell of freshness (my mom keeps a clean house), flopping yourself onto your comfortable bed, now this is what makes me feel at peace.I was relieved to be home, knowing that I was going to see Kristie,a friend of mine that I'm quite fond of. A few hours slipped by with no significant happenings. I was really looking forward to seeing Kristie. She called around six, and made plans to stop by at seven. I was more than excited to see her, and when she showed up I couldn't stop smiling(I was really happy to see her). We talked for a few hours, which let me forget about my plans with Justin and the guys. It had been snowing since early that afternoon, and by nine-thirty we had three or four inches. Kristie lives in Shelburne, which is south of Burlington, and realizing the long drive in front of her, we decided to take off. We headed towards Colchester High School hoping that her car would make it there, and back to her house. It wasn't a problem, it only took us longer than we had expected. Kristie gave my a hug, a few kisses, some cigarettes, and we said our good-byes. She drove off into the snowy night, and already I missed her.

Use of Irony, Satire, and Symbolism in Candide In the novel, Candide, Voltaire uses many literary writing tools to prove the points in which he believes. Some of these many literary tools are irony, satire, and symbolism. Through these tools, Voltaire proves that greed is a universal vice, and usually ends in ones own destruction. Voltaire strongly emphasizes his pessimistic view throughout the story. During Chapter 10, he uses his philosophies, as well as other literary tools, to present greed as a devastating factor of society's corruption. For example, Cunegonde found that someone had stolen her money and jewels. "Who could have stolen my money and diamonds? ...I strongly suspect a reverend Franciscan who slept in the same inn with us last night in Badajoz."(Pg. 40) She was sure that the thief was the reverend; how is it that money can makes someone so holly, corrupt enough to make a sin? Voltaire uses irony here to show the pessimistic view of greed overcoming a holly person's wholesomeness. Voltaire satirized philosophical optimism. He used exaggerations and berated all the petty inhumanities of society. This is illustrated in the scene where Cunegonde was ready to marry a man for money, not on love. Â  "'Madam, you have seventy-two years of nobility, but not one penny. You now have the chance to become the wife of a man who's the greatest lord in South America and has a very handsome mustache." (Pg. 51) As Cunegonde ponders whether or not to marry a man for money, she provide support for Voltaire's overall theme of pessimism. Candide and Cacambo traveled to Eldorado, and found it to be the best place ever. "If our friend Pangloss had seen Eldorado, he wouldn't have said that the castle of Thunder-ten-tronckh was the finest thing on earth." (Pg. 68) Leaving a perfect place, such as Eldorado, where they could be seen as equals, and extremely pleased, seems insane. However, Candide and Cacambo found money more important. They left to live in a corrupt world, filled with riches and wealth. "[If we return to our world] we'll be richer than all the kings of Europe put together." (Pg. 70) This just goes to show that humanity see more, and better of money than happiness, and riches in contentment.

Although the sales had drastically increased, it is not possible to argue whether this excessive demand was from the promotion or low pricing. (b)Promotional Volume burrowed from future sales Since Rocket Soup virtually gave away their product for free in week 12, the average sales volume of Rocket Soup has been lower until week 22. With reference to other aspects of human experience, explore the view that all couples should have the right to a child. Justify your answer. [15] Many would agree with this statement, because parenthood is a human right: â€Å"Parents have the exclusive right to determine freely and responsibly the number and spacing of their children.† Humans have personal sovereignty, which is to be free of the control or coercion of others. Therefore they should be allowed to make their own decisions about their families. The issue becomes more complicated when infertility is involved. This is especially so in cultures where a woman’s worth is based on her ability to produce children. If she does not receive reproductive technology she could face isolation from her community. Looking at the UK, it could be argued that the purpose of the NHS is to solve our health problems, and infertile could be regarded as a health issue. 1 in 6 couples are infertile and there have been 70,000 IVF babies born in the UK. Infertility can have severe emotional impact on a couple and can strain the relationship. It is paradoxical that the NHS will fund abortions but not IVF (in some areas). They are denying desperate couples of their right to a child. The BBC documentary Don’t Take My baby is a good example of a couple who fought hard for their right to a child. It documented the story of a young disabled couple whose every move was monitored by social services as they raised their newborn baby. The mother was wheelchair bound and the father was visually impaired. The father argued that that even if able-bodied people are poor parents, they are never subject to the same amount of scrutiny disabled parents have to go through. The state has no right to decide who has the right to a child, or else we risk becoming a totalitarian society where only the highest calibres of people are permitted to have children. On the other hand, those who disagree would argue that a child is a privilege, not a right. There are some couples that would be better off not having children, such as those with violent criminal convictions where the child would be at risk of harm. With rights come responsibilities. If you cannot live up to the responsibilities of parenthood, then you forfeit your right to a child. Many would use this line of argumentation to dissuade homosexual couples from adopting, because they cannot responsibly provide a child with a father and mother. If the use of reproductive technology grants every couple the right to a child, we risk viewing children as a commodity. The production of children could become commercialised, as is already happening in India. In November 2015 the Indian government banned foreign couples from using Indian surrogates due to fears that poor mothers were being exploited (they received around  £2000 per pregnancy). Additionally, even with IVF some couples will never conceive. They only have a 20% chance. Perhaps infertility is not a health problem that can be solved, but is the will of God: â€Å"’Shall I, who cause to bring forth, shut the womb?’ says your God.† (Isaiah 66:9) Just because a couple does not have the right to bear their own children does not mean that they cannot be parents. In Northern Ireland alone there were 2,785 children in care during 2015. Rather than pouring money in reproductive technology, we should encourage infertile parents to adopt or foster. They can still experience the joys of raising a child, and the child will be saved from a life of never having a permanent home. To conclude, not every couple should have the right to a child. However, we should show immense love and compassion towards those struggling with infertility. To quote Laura Bush, â€Å"For those who deeply want children and are denied them, those missing babies hover like silent ephemeral shadows over their lives.†

For a long period of time people didn’t think about the consequences of their exponential development.Vast tracts of forests were cleared for agricultural purposes, thousands of tons of carbon dioxide dissolved in the atmosphere, hundreds of species on animals and plants become extinct every year. The rapid development of humanity renders a bad influence on Earth. One of the examples of these influence’s is climate change. It’s not a secret that a couple of hundreds of years ago the climate on Earth was colder than now. Many scientists warn about what i s called global warming – a process of a constant increase of the annual temperature across the whole planet.For the first time its surge was recorded in the last quarter of the 20th century, and since that time the average temperature had increased by 0,7Â °?. The further one goes from the equator, the more obvious climate changes become. So what are the possible consequences of global warming? According to the recent reports of the United Nations, during the 21st century the average temperature will rise more than 1, 4-1, 8Â °? and will cause Arctic glaciers melt faster. The sea level will increase by 10 cm.It doesn’t seem to possess any danger, but in reality it will become a serious threat for those countries which are located not very high above the sea level. Some specialists predict that till the end of the current century the ocean will rise on the whole a meter. Netherlands, Great Britain, Japan, as well as the islands of Oceania and the Caribbean basin will be at risk. 30-40% of species and ecosystems will become extinct, because their habitat will change much faster than they adapt. For example, migratory birds start to fly away later in autumn and to come back much earlier in spring. Global warming will negatively affect precipitation maps. A risk of floods in Europe will increase, and the Eastern coast of the United States will undergo increased numbers of hurricanes and soil erosion.Besides, global warming will create a favorable environment for various diseases, so a dramatic growth of epidemics and pandemics can be expected. Scientists have discovered that Earth warms much faster than it did before, and there is convincing evidence that it is humanity who is responsible for that. At the moment research, which aim is to find solutions for this problem is being conducted. Every country should take action to prevent causing more damage to our planet, because the consequences will be serious for everyone.

Resembling peace Essay

In the novel Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad the author condemns the colonization of the Europeans on the African islands of Congo, eminently focusing on the barbarous and inhumane treatment of the natives. In this passage though, the central character Marlow narrates to the other men on his ship about his perspective of the experience he had when he went up the river Congo passing through the wild jungle in order to reach the inner station. The tone throughout the passage suggests a negative connotation of the wilderness of Congo because of the choice of words Marlow uses to describe the jungle. Phrases such as â€Å"unrestful† and the â€Å"noisy world of plants† portraits the jungle as being quite sinister instead of peaceful and quiet as the readers would expect it to be. This passage is a composition of similes, allegory, symbolism, dark and light contrast and hyperbole which Marlow uses abundantly to describe his journey. Marlow compares going up the river as being â€Å"like traveling back to the earliest beginning of the world. â€Å"(1) He uses a simile to describe the jungle as being how the world was earlier before the technology and civilization was born, when the world was pure as it was when it was created by nature. But then he continues the remark by saying â€Å"when vegetation rioted on the earth and the big trees were kings. † Marlow paints this picture as the wilderness having the ability to fight against each other and when there was power between the trees. He uses the word â€Å"king† to describe the variation of power between the trees much like how the Europeans were being superior by trying to civilize the natives through brutal means. Marlow adds to the description of the jungle as having â€Å"a great silence. â€Å"(2) The phrase â€Å"silence† is inserted in his description to give a contrast of what’s happening inside the jungle. Inside the jungle, in the inner station, it has been said that Kurtz uses unconventional â€Å"methods† to obtain the ivory he makes. This suggests that Kurtz is probably using violence or manipulations which are contrasts of â€Å"silence. † More ever, as Marlow’s journey proceeds further and further into the jungle and closer to the inner station, Marlow’s streamer gets attacked by the natives. Moments before they are being attacked, Marlow describes to have heard â€Å"voices† crying wildly coming from the jungle. The diction â€Å"silence† not only is a contrast of what is happening inside the jungle, it is also a contrast of a future scene where they are being attacked. Marlow further describes the river as being facile to get lost in â€Å"as you would in a desert. † This phrase shows that Marlow is confused as to his purpose in this voyage, why he wanted to come on this journey and what he was expecting to find. This phrase also indicates that Marlow perceives the river to be mysterious and that is one of the qualities of the river that urge him to continue his journey because of his curiousness. Later in the passage, Marlow indicates that the river as â€Å"this stillness of life which did not in the least resemble peace. â€Å"(9) This description of the river as not â€Å"resembling peace† connects directly to the journey that Marlow has been traveling in. Ever since Marlow decided to come on this voyage, he has been uncertain as to whom he really is and what he wants to do or what need to be done. Marlow has strong opinions about the Europeans as being â€Å"fools,† â€Å"devils,† and â€Å"folly,† for not knowing what they are doing. Not for being racists or discrimination of the natives as they are being tied up and worked to death. Marlow considers him self as being â€Å"not especially tender† towards the Africans which contradicts to what he has been saying all along through out the novel as African’s as not being our â€Å"enemies. † This passage describes the wildness and the sinister appeal of the river and the wilderness which is a comparison to the mind of Marlow. Inside his head, Marlow is confused, â€Å"unrestful,† and â€Å"not in the least resembling peace. † This journey takes Marlow to the places he has never been before in order to find himself inside.

The verbal communication is secondary to the therapist: Words can lie, but expression does not. A senior citizen in the United States commits suicide every 90 minutes. Clearly, this is a problem that must not be ignored, particularly among older adults who are disproportionately impacted. Although older adults currently make up only 13% of the population, they suffer 19% of all suicide deaths. Persons who are 65 years and older have the highest suicide rates of any age group, and 84% of those who commit suicide are men. Population experts estimate that by 2030, older adults will comprise about 20% of the population, or about 75 million people. Thus, the problem of suicide, if left unaddressed, can be expected to increase. Heisel (2004) states, "There is a pressing need to identify vulnerability and protective factors associated with late-life suicidal ideation and behavior in order to inform assessment and treatment considerations with seniors at risk of suicide" (p. 50). Anyone working with elderly peopleolder adults must be aware of the scope of the problem and the potential ways to help. It is important, therefore, to evaluate ways to reduce the risks posed by depression in older adults, particularly the risk of suicide.
